Americans Observe Age-Old 53 Tradition In Greeting Fall's Arrival THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON Americans noting the official arrival of fall on Sunday will join, ever SO briefly, in a tradition of observing the autumnal equinox that is nearly as ancient as civilization itself. While the observance receives only passing notice in the news media, it is a link with customs that formed the focus of civilizations around the world for thousands of years. The fall equinox, that time of equal daylight and night, is one of the four cardinal points of the year marking off the seasons of life.

It joins the spring equinox and the summer and winter solstices the year's longest and shortest days. For the record, this year's autumnal equinox occurs at 8:07 p.m. MDT Sunday, according to astronomers at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington. Americans generally consider the autumn equinox to mark the start of fall, which continues until the winter solstice on Dec.

21. Meteorologists, however, consider autumn to have begun Sept. 1, ending with the advent of winter on Dec. 1. For most people, of course, autumn is less a precisely measured commodity than a state of mind centering on harvest time, colorful leaves and cooling weather changes that arrive in different places at different times.

But astronically, and historically, there is significance to the event. The spring and fall equinoxes are the only two times of the year Dog That Bit Man Sought The Animal Control Center is trying to locate a large brown dog that bit a 22-year-old man Monday about 8:30 p.m. while he was walking near Glenrio and Palisades NW. Anyone with information is asked to call the center at 766-7907 and refer to bite case No. B-4248.

when the sun rises almost exactly in the East and sets in the West all the rest of the time it's slightly north or south of the east-west line. Those two days, then, formed a major event for ancient civilizations, which centered ceremony around them. For example, the great pyramids of Giza, Egypt, built some 2.700 years before the Christian era began, were precisely constructed to the compass points. The error in alignment is about equal to the thickness of a piece of string seen at a distance of six feet, astronomical experts at the Naval Observatory say. Scientists say such accuracy could only come from close knowledge of the rising and setting of the sun on these dates.

Similar alignments occur in other Egyptian pyramids. England's Stonehenge, which may be as much as 3,500 years old, has stones aligned to the sun's rising and setting on the solstices in summer and winter. There are Irish gravesites aligned to receive the light from the sunrise on the equinox, allowing it to shine down a passage and illuminate stones carved with figures. As long as 2,000 years ago, Plains Indians in Canada constructed the Moose Mountain medicine wheel. This and other medicine wheels consist of a ring of stone with patterns of spokes radiating outward, marking the sunrise at the solstice and the rising of stars.
