A Kitchen Witch Recipe For Joyous Chocolate Chip Cookies (2024)

Hi, my loves and welcome to WiccaNow. Recently I’ve been talking a little more about kitchen witchery, something that I personally feel particularly drawn to. I wrote a post about what being a kitchen witch actually means, along with posts on how to make a banishing salt, a botanical Witchipedia, a post about cinnamon and another about herbs for self-love. Today I want to continue along in this vein and share my favourite kitchen witch recipe for joyful chocolate chip cookies.

I’ve been feeling a little (more like a lot) of anxiety lately. This is partially due to the current state of the world and partially due to some bad family news I received recently. While I’ve been trying to ease this anxiety with my anti-anxiety spell, I’ve also been trying to bring myself joy with small things that I love doing. This has meant that a lot of cooking and baking has been taking place at my house.

For me, picking up some butter and sugar brings me a lot of joy. I can stand in the kitchen and forget about whatever other stuff is happening in my life for a second. Because I’ve recognized that being in the kitchen can be a real help for me, I’ve been trying to do everything with much more intention recently. I identify as an eclectic witch, but a lot of my eclecticism is based around kitchen witchery and so I try to imbue every dish I make with magickal intention.

I don’t know how much you already know about kitchen witchery, but a basic “rule” is to always try to match what you want to manifest with a recipe that suits whatever it is you’re searching for i.e. baking bread and kneading strength into the dough or casting a love spell by making a cupcake. In keeping with this idea, cookies are my ultimate joy bringer.

How great is the smell from a batch of freshly baked cookies? Walking into a home where cookies have just been baked is like walking into a big warm hug. You’re immediately enveloped in a cosy feeling of comfort and childlike joy. Exactly this is the feeling that this kitchen witch recipe for cookies aims to strengthen and share. Make a big batch, and share the joy and love you’ve created with everyone you know!

While this recipe is my own, I’ve taken inspiration from Sarah Kieffer by adding a bit of pan banging to the recipe. I love that this technique gives the cookies crispy edges and soft, chewy centres.

A Few Notes on this Kitchen Witch Recipe for Joyful Cookies

  • The important part of this recipe is to imbue your cookies with your magickal intention the whole time that you’re making them. You’re aiming to bring joy with them so if you’re in a good mood you’ll have a better result. If I try to bake when I’m grumpy or stressed things never go as I planned (both magickally and in terms of whatever it is I’m trying to bake). In saying this though, sometimes I use baking as stress relief, I just know what type of stress I can bake away and what type of stress I can’t get rid of and will be detrimental to my kitchen magick.

  • Please follow the recipe when it comes to resting the cookie dough. I know sometimes it’s hard to wait for things to chill but believe me when I say it makes a huge difference to the cookies if they are properly chilled before you bake them!
  • Caster sugar is a must here. If the white sugar is too coarse, you’ll end up with really grainy cookies. I made them yesterday and didn’t have any fine sugar so I blended the sugar I had in a Vitamix until it was a little finer and it worked perfectly. Weirdly, it’s hard to find good sugar to bake with in Berlin. Brown sugar doesn’t seem to exist and even “fine” white sugar is quite granulated rather compared the fine sugar I’m used to using.
  • Because you are using kitchen magick here, use the best quality ingredients you can afford. I find that the quality of the ingredients can positively impact both the magickal working of the recipe and also the baked product that you make.
  • Please note that all ovens run at different temperatures so the baking times may vary slightly. Mine is quite hot, so things bake a little faster. Use your awesome bakers intuition to judge when these are baked to your liking.

The magickal properties of the ingredients in this Kitchen Witch Recipe

Most of the ingredients here have magickal properties. I want to explain these briefly so that you can learn a little more about the process of matching recipes to intentions in kitchen magic.

  • Sugar draws sweetness to you. By using it in these cookies you’re drawing sweetness to yourself and anyone who eats the cookies. Sweetness can also be interpreted as love, so you are drawing love and affection with the sugar in these cookies.

  • Cinnamon is a magickal booster. It increases the power of other ingredients it’s paired with while imbuing the recipe (and you) with luck and healing. It’s a magickal all-rounder and one of my favourite magickal botanicals.
  • Vanilla is a wonderful addition to this recipe because it draws love to you while also restoring lost or low energy. It’s excellent for reducing stress levels and anxiety and it’s particularly good magickally when paired with a sweetener such as sugar or honey.
  • Salt is a cleansing ingredient and helps to get rid of negativity. By adding it to the cookies and also adding a little pinch on top you’re preventing any bad vibes entering your bake and also yourself.
  • I use an equal mix of dark and milk chocolate in these cookies. I really love adding a high % dark chocolate to cut down on how sweet everything is. Both chocolates also have different magickal properties. Milk chocolate will restore emotional balance while also raising your energy. It’s great for self-love and brings lightness and fun. Dark chocolate draws love while also grounding you and bringing you back to yourself, something that’s really important for bringing joy back into your life if you’re feeling stressed.

  • Eggs are often used in banishing magic so using them in these cookies means that you can banish all the bad energy you’ve been feeling so you can let the joy in again.
  • Butter provides a calming and nurturing energy while soothing emotions. It helps to ease feelings of stress or anxiety in regards to changes that might be happening in your life.
  • Wheat, in this case, flour, draws abundance to you, and when combined with our other ingredients will increase the flow of joy into your life.

Ingredients for my Kitchen Witch Recipe for Joyous Cookies

  • 75g soft brown sugar (if you can’t find it, don’t worry. I used all white sugar the last few times I made these and they turned out fine if a little crisper than when they have brown sugar in them.)
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 115g butter
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp vanilla paste
  • A pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 large egg
  • 160g flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 100g milk chocolate
  • 100g dark chocolate (I like to use 80%, but it depends on how dark you like your chocolate).
  • Flakey sea salt for sprinkling on top of the cookies

Method for my Kitchen Witch Recipe for Joyous Cookies

  1. Melt your butter. While it’s melting, imaging it smoothing over and taking the edge off any anxiety or stress that you’re feeling.
  2. Mix the melted butter and the sugar. Whisk them together until you have a lump-free paste. While you’re mixing, think about how the sugar is going to draw all the love, sweetness and affection that you need to you. Whisk these feelings into your mixture.
  3. Add the vanilla paste, cinnamon, salt and the egg to the butter and sugar mix. Whisk vigorously until the mixture is pale and creamy. While you whisk, think about the cinnamon strengthening you, the vanilla bringing you balance, love and joy and the egg and salt banishing any feelings of self-doubt, anxiety or stress. Whisk away your frustrations and whisk in your love, contentment and joy.
  4. Roughly chop the chocolate. I don’t like my chunks too big but I’ll leave the size of the pieces up to you.
  5. Sift the flour and baking soda together.
  6. Add the flour mix to the butter and sugar mix. Fold all your ingredients together with a spatula, being careful not to overwork the mixture. While you fold the flour into the other ingredients, think about how you are combining all of these separate components to make one complete dish (a cookie in this case). Think about how all of your separate emotions, whether they be good or bad, combines to make you the badass person that you are. All the separate parts of you make one delightfully complete package.
  7. Add your chocolate and mix until JUST combined. Imagine the chocolate infusing your mixture with the child-like joy that chocolate brings.
  8. Cover your mixture and place in the fridge for at least ½ an hour until the cookie dough is thoroughly chilled.
  9. Take the ½ hour (or more) while you’re waiting for the dough to chill to do something nice for yourself. Have a relaxing ritual bath, do a meditation, complete a yoga session or make a crystal grid. Use this time to reflect on what might have been causing your anxiety and stress and on how you might be able to bring lightness and joy back into your life. It’s absolutely ok to not feel joyful and happy all the time, it’s just good to be aware of when you are feeling low so that you can create strategies to get yourself feeling good again.
  10. When you’re ready to bake, pre-heat the oven to 160 degrees Celcius. I set my oven to fan bake.
  11. Shape your cookies into 12 medium balls (make more or less if you want larger or smaller cookies). Flatten each ball slightly and place it onto a baking sheet with a Silpat matt (they are amazing!) or baking paper on it. Make sure that each cookie has a bit of space around it because they’ll definitely spread quite a bit.
  12. Sprinkle each cookie with a bit of flakey sea salt. If you want, chant:

“With this salt, I banish all negativity. With this salt, I cleanse my energy. With this salt, I remove my anxiety. So mote it be.”

  1. Place your cookies in the oven and set a timer for 6 minutes. Check the cookies, and if they are rising in the middle, take them out of the oven quickly and bang the cookie sheet on the counter. This should deflate the cookies and make them spread.

  1. Keep a close eye on how the cookies are baking at this point and when they rise in the middle take them out and bang them on the counter. I did mine every 2 minutes. The cookies take 10-12minutes to bake, but use your judgement and take them out when they are golden around the edges but still soft and chewy in the middle. While you are banging the cookies, imagine you’re releasing all your anxiety and stress. Feel yourself becoming lighter with each bang on the kitchen bench as the stressful energy is released from your body.
  2. Take the cookies out of the oven when they are done to your liking. I slide my whole baking sheet onto a cooling rack so that the cookies don’t keep cooking on a hot tray.
  3. Look at the glorious cookies you’ve just baked. Breath in deeply and inhale all the amazing scents from the cookies. Imagine these scents flooding you with joyous energy and light. Each time you eat one imagine it infusing you with joy, calm and balance.
  4. ENJOY YOUR DELICIOUS COOKIES and let your joy flow freely and abundantly.

My loves, may your anxiety be minimal, your joy be unconfined and your kitchen magick be powerful (and delicious).

Until next time,

Blessed be,
